Team USA heads to Pan Am Games in Guadalajara
October 19, 2011 – Athletic competition in a multitude of sports culminates in a pinnacle event for the Western Hemisphere at the Pan American Games, going on now in Guadalajara. USA Judo will be there in force with competition on the tatamis beginning next week.
The Pan American Games includes a schedule of sports much like the Olympics, from shooting to swimming and mat sports including judo.
Leading the US judo team in the tournament will be Jhonny Prado, head coach of Ki-Itsu-Sai National Training Center in Coral Springs, FL. “I am really proud and honored to be appointed the head coach of the Pan American Games team,” Prado said. “I look forward to helping our athletes bring home a lot of medals.” Judo competition is slated for Oct. 26 – 29.
From Prado’s own club, Angelica Delgado, 52 kg, and Anthony Turner, 100+ kg will be competing in the Pan Am Games, along with other top Olympic contenders Kayla Harrison, 78 kg (Team FORCE, Wakefield, Mass.) and Michael Eldred, 73 kg (Western Idaho Judo Institute, Fruitland, Idaho). Prado was an assistant coach at the 2007 Pan American Games (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and has served on staff of every major senior championship since 2006, including Senior World Championship and Pan American Championship teams.
“I feel like we have a solid team, so I feel like we should have good results,” said Prado. “This is a team that I have been following since they were juniors, so it’s great to have the opportunity to coach them as adults.”
