USA Claims Three More Medals at Finnish Open
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Kristen Allan (Springfield, Va. / Sport Judo / 63kg) won her first B-Level international medal with a silver, one of three trips to the podium for Team USA, at the European Judo Union B-Level Finnish Open on Sunday in Vantaa.
Allan, a 23-year-old who began competing in the sport four years ago, made her first foray onto the European Tour earlier this year and won three matches in a row to compete in the final in Vantaa.
In the first round, Allan choked former Junior U.S. Open Champion Aneta Mozden (CAN) to win by ippon (instant win). Allan then threw Roberta Piano (ITA), a fifth-place finisher at the Rome World Cup, for ippon with a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw).
In the semifinal, Allan took an early lead against Sylwia Deptula (POL), scoring a koka (smallest points) off a sumi gaeshi (sacrifice throw) before choking her for ippon.
Allan would then fight Hilde Drexler (AUT), a former European Junior Champion and fifth place finisher at this year’s Moscow Super World Cup.
Drexler had previously upset Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif. / NYAC) in the semifinals, but was unable to score throughout the match. Allan was given a shido (penalty), though, from which she couldn’t come back.
With 15 seconds on the clock, Allan made one final attempt at an attack with a sumi gaeshi, but Drexler landed on her and pinned Allan to win the match.
Rousey came in as the favorite in the division after winning three European events this year, including last week’s Swedish Open. The Athens Olympian started off the day with two wins by ippon over Emilie Lapalme-Gendron (CAN) and Johanna Ylinen (FIN). In the semis, Rousey threw Drexler for a koka, but then got caught for a yuko that would give Drexler the match.
Rousey rebounded in convincing fashion, armbarring Piano of Italy to win the bronze medal.
Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center/ 52kg) also won a bronze medal on Sunday. Chandler won her first match against Rikke Berg (DEN) by ippon, but lost in the second round to eventual silver medalist Kimberley Renicks (GBR).
In the repechage, Chandler defeated Laurie Wiltshire (GBR) and Jaana Sundberg (FIN), both by a yuko (quarter-point).
In the bronze medal match, Chandler armbarred Stephannie Inglis (GBR) who she also threw for ippon last week at the Swedish Open.
Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / NYAC / Cohen’s Judo Club / 81kg) advanced through the first round on a walkover against Giorgi Gurashvili (GEO).
Cohen won his next two matches on points scored off his signature kata guruma (fireman’s carry throw), first beating Andrew Malone (GBR) and then Ilia Nikolajev (RUS).
In the semifinal, Cohen countered three-time World Cup medalist Diogo Lima’s (POR) ippon seoi nage (shoulder throw), but Lima received a koka for the throw.
The loss dropped Cohen into the bronze medal match where he lost to Mika Toroi (FIN) by a yuko. Cohen finished fifth overall while Toroi added a bronze in Vantaa to last week’s bronze at the Swedish Open.
Nina Cutro-Kelly (Albany, N.Y. / Judo America / 78kg) also finished fifth win a win by ippon over Celine Royon (FRA) and losses by ippon to U.S. Open silver medalist Marylise Levesque (CAN) and Lindsay Sorrell (GBR).
Josh O’Neil (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center / 66kg) picked up his first series of European wins to finish seventh.
O’Neil was up by two yukos when he threw Khalid Gehlan (GBR) 49 seconds into his first match. O’Neil’s second match lasted five minutes, but he still defeated Reigo Toss (EST) by a waza-ari (half-point) and two yukos.
In the quarter-finals, O’Neil committed an early penalty and then lost by ippon in the second minute to Thomas Cadoux Duc (FRA). In the repechage, O’Neil and Jean-Philippe Gagnon (CAN) went into Golden Score (overtime) where O’Neil won by a koka after 34 seconds.
Fighting for entrance into the bronze medal match, O’Neil was given a penalty against Thomas Cadoux Duc (FRA) and lost the match to finish seventh overall.
Top-ranked Adler Volmar (Miami, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site / 100kg) won his first match against Martin Bertagnoli (AUT), but lost the next two to Joao Taveira (POR), who would go on to win the event, and Jussi Rajala (FIN).
Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site / 66kg) lost by ippon in the first minute to Aarne Pitkanen (FIN) and then two minutes into Golden Score to Gareth Carder (GBR).
Joshua Glasser (Saratoga, Calif. / Sacramento Judo / 81kg) lost both of his matches as well, dropping the first by ippon to eventual silver medalist Petteri Luukkainen (FIN) and the second by ippon to Kalem Kachur (CAN).
