Liggett and Stevens Win Hatashita Open

Jeremy Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center / 66kg) and Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / 81kg) both won gold medals in the senior divisions at the Hatashita Open in Toronto on Sunday.

The Hatashita Open, formerly the Ontario Open, drew 750 competitors across junior, senior and master’s divisions.

Liggett, competing in his second international event since moving up to 66kg, won each of his matches by ippon (instant win), including an upset in the semifinals against Sasha Mehmedovic (CAN), a 2006 Pan American Championships bronze medalist who Liggett threw for two waza-ari scores to win the match.  In the final, Liggett was down by a yuko (quarter-point), but came back to armbar Rodion Melchakov (CAN) to win the match and the $500 cash prize awarded to all senior gold medalists.

Stevens, who recently relocated to New York from San Jose, cruised to a 4-0 record, winning all of his matches by ippon.

Marina Shafir (Latham, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) won a silver medal at 78kg, including a first-time win in the semifinals over 2005 U.S. Open silver medalist Andrea Bijould (CAN)

Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center) won a silver medal, going 5-1 at 73kg, losing only to two-time World Cup medalist Nick Tritton (CAN) in an action-packed final which Tritton won by ippon in the last 40 seconds. In the semis, Delpopolo came back from being down by an early waza-ari (half-point) to throw Corey Paquette (CAN) for ippon with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) with about 30 seconds left.

Jeff Fujimoto (Los Angeles, Calif. / Sawtelle / 60kg) lost in the second round to eventual champion Sergio Pessoa (CAN), but fought his way through the repechage and threw Rashad Chin (CAN) for a huge ippon with an o soto gari (major outer reaping leg throw) to win the bronze medal.

Helen Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J. / Cranford Judo & Karate / 70kg) won her first senior international medal, taking a bronze with a win by ippon over Karine Doyon (CAN) in the bronze medal match.

Hannah Martin (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) fought up from 57kg to 63kg, winning the bronze.  After a close loss in the semis to eventual gold medalist Sayaka Tsuruoka (JPN), Martin beat Sabrina Baron (CAN) by ippon in the bronze medal match.

AJ Silverman (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) fought up from his normal 66kg to 73kg.  Silverman took fifth at 73kg, advancing to the semis before losing to Tritton.  In the bronze medal match, Silverman was up by a yuko, before getting leg grabbed for an ippon by Aaron Pfeffer (CAN).

On Saturday, many of the athletes who competed in Sunday’s senior divisions also fought in the IJF-Junior divisions.

Shafir won the only junior gold medal for the day while fellow Junior World Team members Liggett and Martin each won bronze.

Danny Satinsky (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Cohen’s Judo Club / 73kg) and Tony Sangimino (Burlingame, Calif. / Cahill’s Judo Club / 100kg) and Kyle Vashkulat (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / 90kg) also each won bronze medals.

Fujimoto and Nick Delpopolo each finished fifth at 60kg and 73kg, respectively.

Michael Fujimoto was the only U.S. competitor in the Juvenile division, winning 60kg.
