California, Hawaii Athletes Dominate at Junior Olympics
(San Jose, Calif.) – More than 300 athletes between the ages of 6 and 12 competed during the first day of the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday at the San Jose State University Event Center.
Champions were crowned in 45 weight divisions with athletes from California claiming 72 overall medals while the contingent from Hawaii are currently second in the state point totals with 27 total medals.
Nahoakuwoo Salera (Honolulu, Hawaii) was recognized with the Best Technique Award for winning the 42kg Intermediate 2 (Born 1994-1995) division. Salera each of his five matches by ippon (instant win) and demonstrated dynamic throwing ability in each of his matches.
Melinda Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii) received the Sportsmanship Award after winning the 48kg Intermediate 2 division, also going 5-0 to win each of her matches by ippon. Chow dominated each match and showed a constant mat presence that demonstrated she was in control at all times. Although only ?, Chow showed a quiet confidence that manifested itself in smooth execution of her techniques.
Like Salera and Chow, Outstanding Competitor Giovonte Ortiz (Jonesboro, Geo.) won each of his matches in the Intermediate 2 48kg division by ippons – six in total. Ortiz won each match with a variety of different techniques, scoring ippons off pins, throws and switches.
En route to his gold medal win, Ortiz defeated several difficult opponents, including Michael Assels (Garland, Texas) who won each of three junior national events in 2005 as well as the international Junior U.S. Open.
In the final, Ortiz defeated Lance Asuka (Aiea, Hawaii) in what Ortiz would describe as his toughest match of the day.
“I fought pretty well today. I just went out and did fought how I usually do here,” Ortiz said. “Lance was definitely my hardest match, but I beat him with a hip throw and a counter,” Ortiz said.
Asuka would then go on to beat Assels to win the silver medal.
Competition continues for 13-19-year-olds in the Juvenile A, B and IJF Junior divisions on Sunday with matches beginning at 9:30 a.m. and concluding around 3 p.m.
Sunday’s matches will be one of the last opportunities for athletes to obtain critical points on the IJF Junior (under 20) roster in order to qualify to compete in the Junior World Trials, July 29 in Fort Lauderdale.
