The second day of competition at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships brought together nearly 300 competitors between 13-19-years-old and showcased many top junior athletes to be watched during the next few years. Wesley Thomas (San Mateo, Calif./Palo Alto Judo Club) stood out in his Junior Olympic event, winning the IJF Junior (under 20) 81kg division and the Best Technique Award as he went 4-0 to win gold. Thomas, who also began training with the San Jose State University club two years ago, threw Anthony Phelps (Dayton, Ohio/Renshuden) with a taio toshi in the final to take match. More than 300 athletes between the ages of 6 and 12 competed during the first day of the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships Saturday at the San Jose State University Event Center.
Champions were crowned in 45 weight divisions with athletes from California claiming 72 overall medals while the contingent from Hawaii are currently second in the state point totals with 27 total medals.

July 6: Pan American medalists and Past Champions Among Athletes Competing this Weekend
The USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships kick off Saturday at the San Jose State University Event Center. Competition will run on both Saturday and Sunday with many top junior players scheduled to compete. This event is a point tournament for athletes on the USA Judo Junior Elite National Rosters and serves as one of the last opportunities for athletes to qualify to compete at the Junior World Championship Trials, July 29 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Tony Sangimino (Burlingame, Calif./Cahill’s Judo) is considered to be one of the top junior athletes competing this weekend. July 3: Opening Ceremonies and Daily Entertainment Announced for Junior Olympics
The Junior Olympics will kick off Saturday at the San Jose State University Event Center with Opening Ceremonies at 9 a.m. The colors will be presented by the United States Marine Corps of San Jose and jazz vocalist Shanna Carlson will perform the national anthem.
Sunday's Opening Ceremonies will feature the U.S. Marine Corps and David Quinonez, a judo instructor from Alameda High School singing the national anthem.
Be sure to drop by the Upstairs Mezzanine during the tournament for more entertainment, including:
- face painting by the SJSU Cheerleaders
- San Jose Sharkie, the mascot for the San Jose Sharks, will be taking pics and signing autographs Sunday from 11:30 a.m. - noon
- Brewster Thompson - SJSU alumnus and ventriloquist who has made appearances on David Letterman and at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas

June 21: Ten Days Left to Mail in Your Junior Olympic Registration!
Athletes competing in the 2006 Junior Olympics, July 8-9 in San Jose, Calif., have until July 1 (postmark deadline) to send in their entry materials. The registration fee for athletes who submit completed paperwork on or before the July 1 cutoff is $95. May 31: Referee Room Reservations for Junior Olympics
Referees for the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships are encouraged to book their rooms as soon as possible at the Sainte Claire Hotel. This beautiful property is located two blocks from the headquarters hotel and three blocks from the venue. A special rate of $99 has been established for the event. Seeding of Athletes
There will be no seeding of athletes.
Draw Procedures
The draw will be conducted using USA Judo approved software. The draw will be random with the restriction that players having the same Group B (State) affiliation will be placed as far apart in the bracket as possible.
Scheduling
The Texas Match Scheduling system will be used. Contestants will receive a card specifying their contest area number and match number. All contestants are expected to report to their assigned contest area three matches prior to their assigned match number. Tournament Directors
