Junior Worlds Day 4 Results
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Team USA closed out the Junior World Championships in Santo Domingo on Sunday with none of the day’s three competitors advancing out of the preliminary rounds.
Jeremy Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center / 60kg) was considered to be one of the top hopes on the men’s side coming into this event, but lost his first round against Arsen Galstyan (RUS). Liggett went the full five minutes, but lost on a shido (penalty) given for non-combattivity.
Galstyan lost to Elio Verde (ITA) in the next round, eliminating Liggett from further competition.
AJ Silverman (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / 66kg) got caught with an ippon seoi nage (shoulder throw) just over two minutes into his first match and lost by ippon (instant win) to Aliaksei Staushy (BLR).
Staushy lost in the next round to Michael Mayr (AUT), eliminating Silverman.
Sixteen-year-old Brittni Bradford (Land O'Lakes, Fla. / St. Pete Judo / +78kg) lost her first match to Janina Waldhausen (GER). Waldhausen scored early with a yuko (quarter-point) before throwing Bradford with an o soto gari (major outer reaping leg throw) for an ippon in just over a minute.
Waldhausen lost to Ketty Mathe (FRA) in the next round, eliminating Bradford.
Overall, Team USA improved on its performance from 2004, posting a 10 wins during the event, including a bronze medal win on Friday by Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif. / NYAC / 63kg) and a fifth place finish by 16-year-old Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site / 48kg).
“A lot of these athletes haven’t competed much internationally, so the overall experience has been good,” said Head Coach Jhonny Prado (Coral Springs, Fla.) “This was a really young team and there’s six who were born in 1989 or later, so they’ll be able to compete again in 2008. I think everyone’s learned a lot and they’re going to go home and push themselves for the next series of events. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but this team has potential for success in the next few years.”
Up next, most of the team will travel to Miami, Fla. to compete in the Senior U.S. Open where Rousey will defend her 2005 title and Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio / Renshuden / 70kg) will seek a second medal after she earned bronze at 63kg in 2005.
U.S. Open finals action can be watched live Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. EST via Webcast at www.livesportsvideo.com.
