Gotay Finishes Fifth at Sweden Open

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site) finished fifth at the Sweden Open in Boras on Saturday.

Gotay, one of eight Americans to compete on Saturday, opened her day with a win over hometown favorite and two-time 2006 World Cup medalist Maria Lindberg (SWE)

After pinning Lindberg, Gotay won her next two matches over Marlen Hein (GER) and Ana Vicente (POR) to advance to the semifinal against two-time World Cup medalist Corina Caprioriu (ROM).

Gotay lost the match by ippon (instant win)to Caprioriu, the eventual gold medalist, and dropped down to the bronze medal match where she was pinned by Georgina Singleton (GBR).

Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center) finished seventh in her first international event at 52kg since the Pan American Championships in May.

Chandler dominated her first match, throwing Stephannie Inglis (GBR) for a beautiful ippon.  The second match was a 10-minute Golden Score (overtime) marathon which Chandler ultimately won by referees’ decision after no points were scored in the match.

In the repechage, Chandler won her next match on a walkover after Nikolina Simunic (CRO) withdrew from the tournament before losing by a yuko to seven-time World Cup medalist Monica Cabaj (POL)

Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute / 48kg) also finished seventh, beating Bianca Ockedahl (CAN) by a yuko (quarter-point) in the first round and keeping the second match against Susann Stammwitz (GER) close until she lost by ippon in the final minute.

In the repechage, Matsumoto beat Donna Robertson (GBR), a bronze medalist at the Belgium Ladies Open earlier this year, two kokas (smallest points) to one, scoring off of an o uchi gari (major inner reaping leg throw), but then got armbarred by Oiana Blanco (ESP) who had just beaten Ann Shiraishi (Elk Grove, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) by ippon.  Shiraishi went 0-2 on the day, also losing by ippon in her first match to three-time World Cup medalist Kinga Kubicka (POL)

Also competing at 48kg, Michelle Sternick (Mansfield, Pa. / Mansfield University Judo) went 0-1, losing by two yukos and an ippon in her first match against Lindsay Tate (GBR) who subsequently lost her next match, eliminating Sternick.

Stephanie Moyerman (Philadelphia, Pa. / Liberty Bell / 57kg) went 0-2, losing by ippon first to Ida Lindgren (SWE) and then in the repechage to Maryse Guilbault (CAN)

On the men’s side, U.S. Open silver medalist Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / NYAC / Cohen’s Judo Club) and Joshua Glasser (Saratoga, Calif. / Sacramento Judo) both were winless at 81kg.

Cohen and Tom Davis (GBR) were both scoreless until Cohen attempted a leg pick and got countered for an ippon.

Glasser was down by a waza-ari (half-point) early in his match against Bogdan Babulescu (ROM) before losing by ippon in just over a minute.

Chris Snyder (Scotts, Mich. / Southside Dojo / 90kg) also lost by ippon in just over a minute to Alexandre Emond (CAN).
