Men's Belgian Open Day 2 Results
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – The Americans fought well during the second day of the Men’s Belgian Open in Vise on Sunday, picking up several key wins in a tournament that for the second day featured some divisions with more than 70 competitors from 22 countries.
Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / 81kg) had one of the day’s best finishes, winning his first two matches against Stephan Claasen (GER) and Yaya Amerouali (FRA). In the third round, Stevens lost to Euan Burton (GBR).
Burton, the eventual bronze medalist advanced to the semifinals, pulling Stevens through to the repechage, but the American then lost to Jonas Sandstrom, Sweden’s reigning national champion
Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / San Shi / 66kg) defeated Julien Antoine (BEL) in the first round and Phillip Pohl (GER) in the second, but lost to Nicolas Maurer (SUI) in the third round of the 77-man division.
Phillip Spano (Coral Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site / 81kg) had an impressive win over 2004 French National Champion Daniel Belliard in the first round. Spano then lost to Rob Van Laarhoven (NED), a bronze medalist at last year’s Belgian Open.
Josh O’Neil (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) also went 1-1 in the 66kg division, beating Achraf Fikri (FRA), the 2006 European Junior Championships silver medalist at 60kg, before losing to Nils Dochow (GER).
The following athletes competed, but lost in the first round and were not pulled through to the repechage:
