British Open Day 1 Early Results
Women’s 63kg
Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / Pedro’s Judo Center) fights tonight for gold after beating European Champion Sarah Clark (GBR) in the semifinals. After a scoreless opening five minutes, Rousey won the match on a koka (smallest points) in Golden Score.
Kristen Allan (Springfield, Va. / Sport Judo) defeated Connie Ramsay (GBR) in the first-round and lost to Hannah Wahlberg (SWE) in the quarter-finals. After picking up two wins in the repechage, Allan lost to Clark in the bronze medal match to finish fifth.
Women’s 70kg
Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio / Renshuden) lost to Gemma Gibbons (GBR) in the first round. In the repechage, Harrison won her first match and lost her second to finish ninth.
Women’s 78kg
Asma Sharif (Wakefield, Mass. / Team FORCE) went 1-2 in her pool with her win coming over fellow American Lisa Uemura (Salinas, Calif. / Salinas Judo). Uemura went 0-3 in the division. Neither Shafir nor Uemura advanced out of the four-person pool. Marina Shafir (Latham, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) also went 0-2 on the day and failed to advance to the semifinals.
Women’s +78kg
Brittni Bradford (San Antonio, Texas / Universal Judo) went 0-2 in her pool, losing to Ronda Sturley (GBR) and Ashley Fleming (GBR).
Men’s 60kg
Nick Kossor (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) went 1-1 in the division.
Men’s 66kg
Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center / San Shi) and Jeremy Liggett (NYAC / Jason Morris Judo Center) will both fight for bronze tonight.
Flores was thrown for ippon with a sode (sleeve lifting pulling hip throw) in his first match by Jean-Rene Badrick (GBR), who also beat him in the U.S. Open, but fought through the repechage to advance to the bronze medal match. Among his wins was a defeat of Josh O’Neil (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) who he threw and then pinned for ippon.
O’Neil had done well earlier in the day, winning his first two matches to fight Liggett in the quarterfinals. O’Neil was winning the match when Liggett caught him with a throw for ippon with 15 seconds on the clock.
Liggett then lost his semifinal match to drop down to fight for bronze.
In other matches, Nate Torra (El Cerrito, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) lost in the first round to Daniel Luxford by ippon after being down by a yuko (quarter-point).
Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site) went 2-2 on the day.
Men’s 73kg
As of this writing, Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute) and Radu Brestyan (Wakefield, Mass. / Team FORCE) were both preparing to compete in their respective semifinals.
Eldred defeated U.S. Open Champion Bobby Lee (Coral Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) in the quarter-finals. Lee is presently still fighting through the repechage.
Two-time 2006 World Cup medalist Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site) won his first match against Elliott Stewart (GBR). After being up by a yuko in his next match, Reser was given two shidos (penalties) that sent the match against a British opponent into Golden Score. Reser was penalized again and lost the match. Reser’s opponent lost his next match to 2005 British Open Champion Matthew Purrsey (GBR) sankaku (triangle hold).
AJ Silverman (Glenville, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) lost in the first round and was eliminated from the division.
Chuck Jefferson (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University) also went 0-1. |
