Jordan Mouton Places Fifth at World Blind Championships

– Less than a week after
her eighteenth birthday, Jordan Mouton
(Houston
,
Texas
/
Diamondback Judo) found herself fighting as one of the youngest competitors
at the International Blind Sports Association World Championships in
Sao Paulo,
Brazil
on Wednesday.
Mouton, who also competed at the 2007 World Championships in
the 52kg division, moved up to 57kg earlier this year.
After a first-round bye, Mouton lost in the quarter-finals
to eventual bronze medalist Daniele
Silva (BRA). Mouton then advanced
through the repechage, but lost in the bronze medal round to 2006 World
Champion Ramona Brussig (GER).
Twenty-one-year-old Ron
Hawthorne (
Redwood City
,
Calif.
/ Stanford Judo) started off his
day with a win against Hyun Chang Kwak
(KOR) in the 60kg division, but lost his next match to Henry
Borges (URU).
In the repechage,
Hawthorne
lost to Li Xiadong (CHN).
On Wednesday, 2000 Paralympic Champion Scott Moore (
Englewood
,
Colo.
/
Denver
Judo) will be among the top prospects for the podium, competing in the 73kg
division.
A veteran of the 2004 Paralympic and 2006 World Teams, Scott Jones (

Judo) will be competing in
the 81kg division after moving down from 90kg last year.
In the women’s divisions, 1998 World Team veteran Tina Thomas (
