Junior
U.S.
Open Day 2 Results
(Colorado Springs,
Colo.)
– The Junior U.S. Open
Championships concluded on Sunday at the
Broward
County
Convention
Center
in
Ft.
Lauderdale
,
Fla.
Nearly 300 athletes from 22 countries
competed Sunday in age groups that included athletes between 9-12 and
17-20-years-old.
The second day of competition included many great storylines
in the IJF-Junior (Under-20) categories as long-time top-ranked players
continued to have success in their divisions as well as several upsets and
players moving into new weight categories.
Just a week after winning bronze in the 48kg division at the
Senior Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training
Site at North Miami) had little trouble fighting up to 52kg. Rodriguez ran through the division with
straight ippons (instant win), including a final round throw in the opening
seconds of her match against Samantha
Martin
(Burleson
,
Texas
/
USA
Stars / Ruben Martin Judo). Martin
was a medalist in the 44kg division at the Senior Nationals in April who has
since moved up to 52kg.
With Rodriguez temporarily out of the division, a pair of
sisters went 1-2 at 48kg. Second-ranked Brenna Clark (Hercules,
Calif.
/ Amador Judo) fought older
sister Tara in the final. Although Brenna has been in the 48kg division
for several years, Tara was a 57kg player who moved down to 52kg last year and
won a silver medal in the division at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships
in
San Antonio
last week.
The two bowed in and shortly thereafter
Tara
threw Brenna for ippon with a kata guruma (fireman’s carry).
Helen Delpopolo
(Westfield, N.J. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo
Center) also made a division shift, dropping from 70kg where she placed
fifth at the Senior Nationals down to 63kg. Delpopolo fought top-ranked junior Paula
Duarte
(Baldwin Park
,
Calif.
/ Mojica Judo) in the final,
throwing Duarte with an o soto gari (outer leg throw) for a waza-ari
(half-point) score.
Helen’s brother Nick
Delpopolo
(Glenville
,
N.Y.
/ NYAC /
USA
Judo National
Training Site at the
Jason
Morris
Judo
Center)
also won his
division. The 2007 Senior Nationals
silver medalist threw Danny Satinsky
(Buffalo Grove
,
Ill.
/ Cohen’s Judo) in the final.
Many expected a rematch of last year’s 73kg final where Bobby Lee
(Coral Springs
,
Fla.
/ USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) defeated Delpopolo for
gold after losing the Trials the day before, but it wasn’t to be as Lee fought
up to 81kg. Lee lost to eventual champion Dilyver Sheykhislyamov (UKR) who
also beat top-ranked 81kg junior Wesley
Thomas
(San Mateo
,
Calif.
/
Palo Alto
Judo) in the final.
The latest match-up between Angelica Delgado
(Coral Springs
,
Fla.
/
USA
Judo National Training Site at
North Miami)
and Hana Carmichael
(Wellington
,
Fla.
/ Budokan Judo) in the 57kg division was interrupted by Ikaru Zarate (VEN / Coral Springs, Fla. /
Ki-Itsu-Sai), one of Venezuela’s top players who is training for two weeks
in the United States.
Zarate beat
Carmichael
by
ippon and went on to throw Delgado with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) for a
waza-ari in the final.
In the 66kg division, Ronnie
Talledo (PER /
Coral Springs
,
Fla.
/ Ki-Itsu-Sai), a former
New York Open Champion in the 60kg division, won the gold medal, beating Daniel Chow
(Honolulu
,
Hawaii
/
Hawaii
Tenri) in the
final. The bigger buzz around the
tournament wasn’t Talledo winning the division, but rather the early round loss
of top-ranked Jeremy Liggett (Glenville,
N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center).
Liggett lost to Talledo in the second round and then dropped
down to the repechage where he was thrown for ippon by Ross Nakamura
(Mission Hills
,
Calif.
/ Valley Judo / Nanka).
The 44kg division proved to be a hotly contested one as well
with Senior National Champion Taylor
Ibera (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri Judo) beating 2006 Senior Pan Am
Champion Diana Cobos (ECU) on points
in the final. Earlier in the day, Cobos
defeated Senior Nationals silver medalist Veronica
Prado (
Coral Springs
,
Fla.
/ USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) while Senior Pan Am
silver medalist Alexa Liddie (Colorado
Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training
Center) nearly advanced to the final, but lost in the final 20 seconds of
her match against Ibera. With the score
tied, the two went into groundwork and Ibera won with a 25-second pin for
ippon.
