(Miami, Fla.) – Athletes from more than 20 states competed in the USA Judo Middle and High School National

Championships Saturday at Pharmed Arena at Florida International University.

Ronnie Talledo (PER / North Lauderdale, Fla.) won of the day’s most difficult division – High School Men’s 66kg.

Talledo, an elite-level senior player in the 60kg division, fought up for the High School Nationals and took the title with a 5-0 record, including a final match win over Rafael Ramos (North Bergen, N.J. / Emerson H.S.), the 2006 Senior National Champion.

Ramos racked up a trio of penalties throughout the match giving Talledo the lead before the Peruvian threw Ramos in the final minute for a waza-ari (half-point) score to end the match in the final minute.

Ramos had advanced to the final round following one of the closest semifinals of the day, a win over 2006 USA Judo National Junior Olympic Champion Daniel Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou High School).  At the end of the regulation five minute match, Chow nearly secured the win with a throw in the closing seconds, but it wasn’t enough for a score and sent the match into Golden Score (overtime).  Chow kept coming at Ramos with a constant stream of attacks, but Ramos earned the first score – a koka that moved him into the final.

Twelve-year-old Giovonte Ortiz (Jonesboro, Ga. / MD Roberts) was the star of the middle school divisions as he took the 48kg title and the Outstanding Competitor

Much like in 2006 when Ortiz ran through all four major junior U.S. events as well as the Pan American Infantile Championships, he again won each of his matches by ippons (instant win) to take the Outstanding Competitor Award across both the middle and high school divisions.

Pror to the final, Ortiz threw Ricondo Cole (Providence, R.I.), a 2006 Pan American Infantile Championships silver medalist in the 13-14-year-old division, for ippon with a stunning utsuri goshi (changing hip throw) to win the match.

Carlos Moran (Clifton, N.J. / Clifton H.S.), a 2006 High School National Champion in the 81kg division, won the 90kg division this year, upsetting 2006 National Champion Steve Fayzakov (Fresh Meadows, N.Y. / Forest Hills H.S.) with a throw for ippon in the first minute of the match.

Moran, who won three matches by ippon during the day, also won the Best Technique Award.

Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / John Ferguson), this year’s Fighting Spirit Award winner, won the 57kg division.  After easily handling most of her opponents, Delgado, the #1 57kg junior in the United States, fought Hana Carmichael (Wellington, Fla. / Palm Beach Central) in the final.

Carmichael and Delgado not only have a cross-town rivalry, but also fought back and forth throughout the past year in the quest to be the #1 junior.

This time the match went to Golden Score and while Delgado dominated most of the regulation action, Carmichael was the aggressor in overtime, but Delgado caught her for a yuko (quarter-point) score to win the match.

Brenna Clark (Hercules, Calif. / Hercules H.S.) was a runner-up to the High School National title in 2006, but won this year’s crown when she beat Daimisy Porras (Coral Springs, Fla. / Hialeah H.S.) in the 48kg final.  Clark was down by a shido and scores when she caught Porras with a cross leg grab with two minutes left and threw Porras, a 2006 Champion at 44kg, for ippon.

Paola Genao-Butler (Pasadera, Texas / Pasadera Memorial) knocked off the top-ranked U.S. junior in the 63kg division in the quarter-finals in Genao-Butler’s first major event at 63kg.

In the final, however, Paula Duarte (Baldwin Park, Calif. / Sierra Vista H.S.) threw Genao-Butler for ippon to take her second High School gold after winning at 57kg in 2006.

Miguel Ballesteros (Miami, Fla. / Coral Reef Senior High) won the high school men’s 60kg division, quickly throwing Jeff Fujimoto (Los Angeles, Calif. / Palisades Charter) for ippon in the final.

Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio / Virtual High School of Excellence) repeated her 2006 results, winning both the 70kg and Open women’s high school divisions.  In the 70kg final Harrison defeated Helen Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J. / Edison International School) on points.  Less than half an hour later, Harrison was on the mat again in the Open division final against Natalie Laursen (Livermore, Calif.), the #1 U.S. player at 63kg.  Harrison was up by four kokas (smallest points), a yuko (quarter point) and a waza-ari (half-point) when Laursen was given her fourth penalty, ending the match.

Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y. / Burnt Hills-Ballston) won his second consecutive 73kg high school gold this year, beating Alfred Raymond (Providence, R.I. / Cranston H.S.) by a yuko (quarter-point) and a koka (smallest points) in the final.

Top-ranked 81kg player Wesley Thomas (San Mateo, Calif. / Aragon High School) got a roar of approval from his teammates at the USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University when he threw Antonio Rodriguez (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Archbishop McCorthay) in the final.

The San Jose State crew came to cheer on the high schooler before they take to the mat tomorrow for the Collegiate National Championships and their bid for a 42nd Collegiate Team title in a 46-year span.

Following the Collegiate Nationals, seven U.S. high school players will fight members of the Japan High School All-Star Team in a friendly team competition.
