Morris Cup VI Results

Completed Draws

Elite judo players from around the nation as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, Great Britain and Australia, participated in the Morris Cup VI in Burnt Hills, N.Y. on Saturday.

The Morris Cup was the final USA Judo Senior E-Level Tournament leading up to the USA Judo Senior National Championships being held on Friday and Saturday in Miami, Fla.

In her second point tournament since moving up to 78kg, Katie Mocco (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won the division with a pair of victories over her teammate Marina Shafir (Latham, N.Y.), a former Senior Nationals medalist.  Although Mocco threw the 2006 Junior World Team member for ippon twice, Shafir won their first match of the day with a throw for ippon.

Like Mocco, Asma Sharif (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team Force / +78kg) also won her second tournament since moving up a division, winning each of four matches by ippon.

Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won the 73kg division, dropping only one match to Colombian Edwin Vallejo who he later beat again to move into the final against 2006 Senior Nationals medalist Radu Brestyan (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE).

Brestyan was undefeated in the division with four wins, but he withdrew prior to his final pair of fights with Delpopolo, giving Delpopolo the gold medal by walkover.

Although JMJC teammates Travis Stevens and Yuko Sin, both of Glenville, N.Y., will likely be on the opposite side of the draw at Nationals this week, they fought in the 81kg division final on Saturday with Stevens taking both wins to place first while Sin finished second.

Nick Kossor (Glenville, N.Y. / 60kg) and Jeremy Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / 66kg), both of the USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center, each won his respective division with a 4-0 record.

Second-ranked Daniel McCormick (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) didn’t win his +100kg division, but earned a notable win, throwing four-time Pan Am medalist Trevor McAlpine (CAN) for ippon in their first match.  McCormick was up by a waza-ari (half-point) in their next match when he got caught with a throw for ippon in the final 30 seconds.  McAlpine won the third match as well to finish first to McCormick’s second.

After a first-round bye, 2006 Junior World Team member Hannah Martin (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / 57kg) lost to 2006 Morris Cup Champion Maude-Helene Benoit (CAN) and dropped down to the loser’s pool.  On the top of the bracket former 52kg Pan Am Champion Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won her first two matches, but withdrew from the tournament prior to her final against Benoit.  Martin won her next two matches and moved back up to fight Benoit after Chandler withdrew.  Martin finished second after another loss to Benoit while Chandler finished third.

Athens Olympian Rick Hawn (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) won four matches in the 90kg division, but lost twice to Robert Edward (CAN) to finish third.

Kyle Vashkulat (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / 100kg) moved up to his division from 90kg where he won the Pan Am Juvenile title in 2006.  Although he didn’t place in the division, Vashkulat produced a significant upset in the first round, throwing New York Open medalist Guillaume Cavalli (CAN) for ippon.

The Morris Cup was attended by 420 total competitors from 12 states and at least five nations.
