2007 Pan Am Day 1 Results Blog
10:33 a.m. After some debate regarding the fit of 78kg Marina Lambert's gi, her top is swapped out for another
one and her first match against Lorena Briceno begins. Lambert gets a shido at 3:30 and a second at 3:25.
Marina was thrown with a sumi gaeshi at 2:55.
On Mat 2, Brittni Bradford (+78kg) gets pinned by Mabel Henriquez (DOM) in the first minute.
11:09 a.m. Aaron Cohen (81kg) is up by a yuko and a koka against Abderraman Brenes (PUR), pins him in the third minute.
Garry St. Leger throws Luken Bent (COL) with a kata guruma 21 seconds in for ippon.
Kristen Allan defeats Nadjeda Gena (HAI) by three shidos to one.
Onix Cortes throws Ronda Rouseyfor a yuko at 3:30, Cuban goes into groundwork, but matte called. Shido for CUB at 3:10. Ronda shido, then thrown for a yuko at 2:30. Ronda down by a third yuko, Cuba gets another penalty. Ronda gets a penalty at 1:10. At 59: Ronda throws Cortes for a waza-ari. There's some confusion regarding who's score it is and Team USA shouts "waza-ari white!" for Ronda. The waza-ari is waved off and Ronda picks up the pace. Cortes is given a penalty for false attack with one second left giving Ronda the match by a waza-ari. Referees decide that the penalty was only Cortes' second and award her the match.
11:59 a.m. Kirk Hoffmann (+100kg) went into overtime against Pablo Figueroa (PUR) as each had two penalties. Hoffmann was the aggressor through GS and won several minutes in (scoreboard was down) by a shido for stalling for Figueroa.
Aaron Cohen (81kg) was thrown for a waza-ari by Oscar Cardenas (CUB). Both were given stalling shidos, then Cardenas threw Cohen for ippon at 1:15.
12:13 p.m. Garry St. Leger (90kg) was pinned for 19 seconds by Jorge Benavide (CUB), giving Cuba a yuko. Cuba scored a second yuko, but then was given a shido. St. Leger was thrown for ippon at 1:49.
12:26 p.m. Kristen Allan (63kg) choked Irene Figoli (URU) on the first exchange. Allan will fight former World Champion Daniela Krukower (ARG) in the semifinals.
12:27 p.m. Marina Lamber (78kg) will fight for bronze tonight. Lambert also says hello to her mother and sister Sarah.
Allan is thrown in the second minute by Krukower for ippon.
12:30 p.m. Cortes (CUB) is thrown by a Colombian in the semifinals of the 70kg division in the first 30 seconds. An exuberant Yuri Alvear looks to the ceiling and does a quick sign of the cross in joy.
12:33 p.m. Hoffmann, down by a shido, is thrown for ippon by Daniel Hernandez (BRA) in the semifinals.
12:34 p.m. Volmar is pinned by Leonardo Leite in the semifinals.
1:10 p.m. Garry St. Leger threw Franklin Perez (DOM) with a te guruma for ippon in the repechage.
1:28 p.m. St. Leger advances through the repechage to the bronze medal match against Argentina tonight.
Good news all around for the men's heavyweights ... 90kg, 100kg and +100kg are all fighting for bronze which should put each of them in a position to qualify for the Pan Am Games.
2:31 p.m. Aaron Cohen throws ESA in first five seconds to secure a spot in the bronze medal match against Tyler Boras (CAN).
Ronda Rousey pinned Veronica Mendoza for ippon after a repechage walkover against Diana Chala (ECU) who withdrew from her previous match against Onix Cortes.
Seven of the eight U.S. athletes will fight for bronze (women's 63kg, 70kg, 78kg and men's 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg). |
