Thirty-Five Junior
Players to Compete in
Peru
This Weekend
A team of 35 junior athletes between 11 and 16-years-old
will compete at the Jita Kyoei Cup in
Lima,
Peru
on Nov. 3.
Athletes on the
U.S.
team include 2006 Pan American Infantile Champions Carly Patton
(Zephyrhills, Fla.
/ El Mambi Judo Club) and Giovante Ortiz
(Jonesboro, Ga. / Waka Mu
Sha Judo).
Patton, a two-time gold medalist in the 53kg division and
2005 Outstanding Competitor, moved up to 58kg this year.
Ortiz, a Grand Slam Champion who won all four major
U.S.
junior tournaments in 2006 as well as the
Pan Am title, moved up to from 48kg to 53kg where he received a challenge from Steven Perez
(Miami, Fla.
/ Ki-Itsu-Sai) with whom he flip-flopped wins over the summer. Perez also will be competing in the 53kg
Juvenile A (13-14-year-olds) division.

Chow

Tenri) also won a medal at the 2006 Pan Am Infantile Championships, taking
silver in the 48kg division. Now 53kg,
Chow won both the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships and the Junior
U.S. Open over the summer.

is competing in the 38kg
Intermediate 2 (11-12-year-olds) division where he also won a silver medal at
the 2006 Pan Am Infantile Championships.
Andrew Porras
(Hialeah, Fla.
/ Ki-Itsu-Sai) will be another athlete to watch. Porras is the only
U.S.
player slated to compete as a
Juvenile B (15-16-year-olds) player where he will be fighting in the 73kg
division – up from 64kg where he won a silver medal in the 13-14-year-old
division at the 2006 Pan Am Infantile Championships.
Sarah Lambert
(Chesapeake, Va.
/
Washington Judo) will be competing in her first tournament outside the
United States, but the 12-year-old was unbeaten in major U.S. junior
competition over the summer and will likely be a favorite in the Intermediate 2
