Volmar and Turner Win Bronze Medals at Sweden Open

Adler Volmar (second from right) receives his bronze medal in the 100kg division.

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Two heavyweight U.S. judo players out of the USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami each won his first career European medal at the Sweden Open, a USA Judo Senior B-Level Point Tournament, on Saturday in Boras.

Adler Volmar (Coral Springs, Fla. / 100kg), a 2007 Pan Am Championships medalist in the Open division, came to Sweden after two difficult weeks at the U.S. Open and Rendez-Vous Canada where he placed fifth in Montreal, but missed the 100kg medal rounds at the Open.

Volmar was back in good form as the top-ranked U.S. player in the 100kg division, defeating Tomi Jaakola (FIN) in the first round.  Although Volmar lost to eventual silver medalist Peter Lomax (GBR) in the quarter-finals, he won three consecutive matches to win bronze with victories over Stefan Krause (GER), Tuguldor Bayarsaikhan (MGL) and Martin Pacek (SWE).

In an interesting twist to the day’s fights, the +100kg division included a rematch of the Senior Nationals final between Anthony Turner (Miami, Fla.) and Joel Brutus who has since chosen to fight for his native Haiti .

Anthony Turner (second from right) receives his bronze medal in the +100kg division.

While Brutus beat Turner in the final in April, Turner took the win, and the bronze, on Saturday.  Turner posted a 3-1 record for the day with wins over Matthew Clempner (GBR) and Tobias Albuschies (GER).  Turner’s only loss came in the quarter-finals to World University Games silver medalist Aleksandar Petkovic (SRB).

The top two U.S. players in the 48kg division each fought for bronze and both placed fifth.

Pan Am Games medalist Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) rebounded from an opening round loss by referees’ decision against eventual gold medalist Bianca Ockedahl (CAN) to win her first match in the repechage against Malin Nordin (SWE) by a koka (smallest points).  Rodriguez’s next fight was a rematch against Ann Shiraishi (Elk Grove, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) who she defeated two weeks ago in the U.S. Open final.  Rodriguez won by a waza-ari (half-point) this time to advance to the bronze medal match where she lost to Ewa Konieczny (POL).  Although Rodriguez managed to earn a yuko (quarter-point) against Konieczny, the reigning European U20 silver medalist earned both yuko and koka scores to win bronze.

Seven-time National Champion Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) also lost to Konieczny, dropping her match by yuko and waza-ari scores after a first-round win against Charlotte Farbon (GBR).  In the repechage, Matsumoto beat Durya Cibir (TUR), racking up two yukos before beating Cibir by ippon three minutes into the match.  In the bronze medal match, however, Matsumoto was held scoreless by 2006 European U23 silver medalist Wasilisa Prill (GER) who won by a waza-ari and a yuko.

Pan Am Games Champion Travis Stevens (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) placed seventh in the 81kg division.

Stevens beat Jek Ismajilzade (SWE) and Giorgi Gurashvili (GEO) in the first two rounds, but lost to eventual silver medalist Tom Davis (GBR) in the quarter-finals.

In the repechage, Stevens first beat former Pan Am Champion Tyler Boras (CAN) for the second time in a week and then defeated two-time 2006 World Cup medalist Micha Egger (SUI) by ippon (instant win) in just over two minutes.  With one match left to advance to the bronze medal round, Stevens lost by ippon to Marian Halas (ROM) who would go on to place third.

Janine Nakao (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) also placed seventh as a 57kg player with one of the day’s breakout performances for Team USA .

The 20-year-old who placed third as a 63kg player at the Senior Nationals moved back down to 57kg over the summer, placing fifth at the Rendez-Vous Canada last week.  Nakao beat Janine Johnson (GBR) and Tallinn World Cup fifth-place finisher Jennie Andreasson (SWE) in the first and second rounds.

Nakao lost in the third round to eventual silver medalist Anne Katzler (GER).  She then beat Becky Dunning (GBR) in her first repechage match before losing to Monika Wozniak (POL).

Senior Nationals runner-up Hannah Martin (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) also lost to Wozniak (POL) earlier in the day, giving up her first round match by two yukos and a waza-ari.

Angelica Delgado (Miami , Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami), the top-ranked junior in the 57kg division, lost in the first round by a waza-ari to Kudret Egilmez (TUR).

Aaron Handy (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) was up by a koka in his first-round match against Thierry Rappard (SUI), before losing by ippon in the final minute.
