2011 El Salvador World Cup; San Salvador, El Salvador

Day One

Marti Malloy takes SILVER At World Cup San Salvador

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 16, 2011 – Marti Malloy won her third World Cup medal this month, fighting her way through tough competition to stand on the podium for Team USA at the World Cup San Salvador today.

Malloy, 57kg (USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University), bested Brazil’s Mariana Barros in the first round, Canada’s Joliane Melancon in the second round, and then Slovenia’s Vesna Dzukic before losing to Brazil’s Rafaela Silva in the gold medal round.

Malloy took gold at the World Cup Miami earlier this month and then a bronze at the World Cup in Venezuela a week ago.

“I felt really good going into the day,” Malloy said. “I feel like I had a really good draw, which I capitalized on.” And away she went, scoring ippons in each of the matches approaching the final round.

“My focus was on playing a smarter match,” which translated into patience on the mat, waiting for the moment, waiting for her opponents, then countering when they moved for a throw, Malloy said.

But in the final round, she faced Silva, who she has only beaten once that Malloy recalled. Malloy shot for a throw and Silva countered with an ippon. “Gives me something to go back home and work on,” Malloy said.

Placing 5th for Team USA was Hanna Carmichael, 57kg (NYAC /USA Judo National Team FORCE in Wakefield, Mass.), who beat Australia’s Carli Renzi and Venezuela’s Flor Velazquez before losing to Brazil’s Silva in the bronze-medal round. Silva eventually took gold in the division.

Competition continues tomorrow, Sunday, in San Salvador.

Day Two

Team USA Captures SILVER and BRONZE At World Cup San Salvador

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vashkulat and St. Leger on Day 2 Add BRONZES To SILVER Taken by Malloy on Day 1

July 17, 2011 – Team USA is bringing home the medals from a hot field of competition at the World Cup San Salvador this weekend including a huge upset by Harry St. Leger of New York who captured a bronze today after defeating the 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Brazilian powerhouse Flavio Canto.

Also taking bronze today was Kyle Vashkulat, who battled his way back to the podium after falling into repechage. Together, they added their medals to the silver won by Marti Malloy yesterday in San Salvador, her third World Cup medal in a month, including a gold at the super successful World Cup Miami.

Also honored was Team USA’s Eddie Liddie, Director of High Performance for USA Judo, overseeing all the Olympic training for judo in the United States. Liddie was presented with a special plaque for his competition in the Olympics, where he won a bronze medal in 1984 in Los Angeles.

St. Leger, 81kg (NYAC/Legrosports, NY) started his day besting Sweden’s Micha Egger in the first match. Favored Canto, meanwhile, pulled a bye for his first round before stepping onto the mat against St. Leger.

Canto is something of a judo giant in South America. In addition to winning a bronze in the 2004 Olympics, Canto is a three-time medalist in the Pan American Games, taking a gold, silver and bronze in that elite tournament. So, this was a huge match for St. Leger, who threw the veteran warrior for ippon, switching from a front seoi nage to a back throw at 3 minutes and 40 seconds into the fight.

Szabolcs Krizsan of Hungary was next and, again, St. Leger scored an ippon to win the match. In his fourth fight of the day, St. Leger lost against Antonio Ciano, who eventually took gold in the division.

Vashkulat, 100kg (NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center, Glenville, NY), who is a favorite for a spot on Team USA’s roster for the Olympics in London next year, defeated Chile’s Italo Cordova and then Venezuela’s Albenys Rosales before falling into repechage from a loss to Amel Mekic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Vashkulat, though, clawed back, defeating Balint Farkas of Hungary for a bronze.

Marti Malloy was Team USA’s big winner yesterday in San Salvador, taking her third World Cup medal this month, fighting her way through tough competition to stand on the podium.
