( Colorado Springs , Colo. ) – Five-time National Champion Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) has accepted a slot in the 52kg division to compete at the World Championships, Sept. 13-16 in Rio de Janeiro.

Chandler replaces 15-year-old Franchesca Durand ( Coral Springs , Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami ) who was named to the team after defeating Chandler during the World Team Trials in Miami on April 21.

Durand withdrew from both the World and Pan American Games Teams due to personal reasons and, as the team alternate, Chandler was offered the slot for both the Games and Worlds Teams.

Chandler declined to participate in the Pan American Games in July as she was recovering from shoulder surgery, but is excited to be competing at the World Championships.

“I fought with only one working arm for so long that getting used to having two working shoulders is a nice surprise,” Chandler said.  “My training is going great and I'm glad to be back on the mat and look forward to competing at my second World Championships.”
