Chandler Finishes Seventh at Hungary World Cup
Carrie Chandler (Scotia, N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center/52kg) finished the first leg of her European Tour Saturday with a seventh place finish at the Hungary World Cup in Budapest.
Chandler drew a first round bye and then pinned Andrea Romgalicza (ROM) to advance to the quarterfinals where she lost a tough match, getting caught in a pin in the last 30 seconds by fifth-place finisher Hedvig Karakas (HUN).
In the repechage she went on to beat Tatjana Trivic (SCG) by yuko (quarter-point). As Chandler looked to advance to the bronze medal match, she got caught with a drop seoi nage by 2004 World Junior Champion Yuka Nishida (JPN) in the second half of the match and lost by ippon (instant win) to finish seventh overall.
Chandler, who is in just her second full year competing at 52kg after she made the move down from 57kg, began her European Tour three weeks ago with bronze medal win at the Belgium Open and placed ninth last week at the Paris Super World Cup.
“I’m happy with my performance on the first leg of the European Tour as I’ve compiled a 10-5 overall match record,” Chandler said. “I hope that people are starting to take me for a contender at the higher level events and I can’t wait to get home and start training again so I can try to medal at the second stage of the tour.”
Katie Mocco (Scotia, N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center/70kg) also concluded the first leg of her European Tour in Hungary, losing her first match Sunday to Mariya Semenyuk (UKR) by yuko. Semenyuk ultimately finished fifth, but was lost in the quarter-finals, eliminating Mocco from the event.
Chandler and Mocco are scheduled to return to the tour with two more World Cup events in Rome (March 25-26) and Birmingham, Great Britain (April 1-2) where she will be joined by her 2005 World Teammates Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif./NYAC/East Bay Judo Insitute/48kg), Valerie Gotay (Temecula, Calif./Judo America/57kg), Ronda Rousey (Buffalo Grove, Ill./NYAC/Cohen’s Judo Club/63kg) and Molly O’Rourke (El Cerrito, Calif./East Bay Judo Institute/78kg) as well as top-ranked Eva Smith (Fall River, Mass./Taki-Gawa/+78kg).
