Gotay and Chandler Place Ninth at Paris Super World Cup

Valerie Gotay (Temecula, Calif./Judo America/57kg) and Carrie Chandler (Scotia, N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center/52kg) each had successful first appearances at the Paris Super World Cup Saturday, finishing in ninth place in their respective weight categories.

The Paris Super World Cup is a European A+ Level event, on the same level as the Olympic Games and World Championships

On the heels of a bronze medal win last week at the Belgian Ladies Open, Chandler looked to be in the medal hunt in Paris, advancing through the first two rounds with wins over Mareen Kraeh (GER), gold medalist at last year’s Belgian Open, by yuko (quarter-point) and Aurelie Plaisant (FRA) by ippon (instant win).

In the quarterfinals, Junjie Shi (CHN) scored with a koka (smallest points) before beating the American by ippon en route to an eventual gold medal – Shi’s first major European medal.

Chandler then advanced to the repechage where she lost on a penalty to Kyung Ok Kim (KOR) who would go on to win bronze.

Gotay also won her first two matches, defeating 2005 Paris medalist Sarah Loko (FRA) and Lila Latrous (ALG) both ippon.  Gotay’s third round was a preview of a matchup many expect to see at the Pan American Championships in May as she fought 2001 World Champion Yurisleidys Lupety (CUB).  Gotay committed three penalties in the match before losing by waza-ari (half-point).

Gotay withdrew prior to her first repechage match against Dani Libosan (NED) due to an injury sustained in a previous match.

Competing in the 63kg division, Kristen Allan (Springfield, Va./Sport Judo) failed to advance out of the first round, losing by two kokas (smallest points) and a yuko to Ilana Korval (FRA).

On the men’s side, Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site/73kg) drew a bye for the first round, but lost in the second to Sirazhudin Magomedov (RUS).  Magomedov then lost to World and Olympic Champion Won-Hee Lee (KOR) in the quarters and was unable to pull Reser through to the repechage.

Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site/66kg) drew the toughest first match of the day among the American contingent as he met World Champion Joao Derly (BRA), losing by ippon to the eventual gold medalist.

In the repechage, Takata lost by ippon to Kwang Sub Kim (KOR).

Sunday’s competition will feature men’s competition in the 81kg, 90kg, 100kg and +100kg divisions and women’s events in the 70kg, 78kg and +78kg divisions.

Katie Mocco (Scotia, N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center/70kg) has a first-round match against Ann Laure Polli (FRA).  A trip to the second round for Mocco would mean a fight against 2005 World Champion Edith Bosch (NED).

Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo National Training Site/+100kg) drew Gadzimurad Muslimov (RUS) in the first round.  Hoffmann’s second round match would be against Canadian rival Trevor McAlpine.
