Personal: A former highly ranked 66kg player for most of his career, O'Neil made the decision to move down to 60kg during the summer of 2007 with less than a year togo until the 2008 Olympic Games. The choice proved to be a smart one as he placed fifth at his first tournament in the new division – the German Open, a tuneup for the World Championships. O'Neil proved he could compete with some of the best players in the world, O'Neil upset two-time European medalist Salamat Utarbayev (KAZ) in the quarter-finals. Later in the fall, O'Neil placed ninth at the Birmingham World Cup, defeating former World Cup medalist Javier Fernandez (ESP). O'Neil fought up to the 66kg division at the Senior National Championships where he won his second Senior National bronze medal.
