Brestyan and Takata Win Gold at New York Open
(New York City, N.Y.) – Radu Brestyan (Medway, Mass./Pedro’s Judo Center/73 kg) and Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas/Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site/66 kg) won their first and second New York Open titles, respectively, Saturday at the New York Athletic Club.
The New York Open is an annual elite men’s tournament that is classified as a USA Judo Senior C Level points event, that draws most of the top Americans as well as an international field that includes Olympic and World Championship medallists.
Brestyan, a former Brown University wrestler, went undefeated throughout the day to advance to a final match against Samir Boucheraoua (FRA). The French player led throughout the match, but was disqualified for head diving.
“I went to throw him with uchimata (inner thigh throw) and he went headfirst so they threw him out of the match,” Brestyan said.
Takata, who won the New York Open at 60 kg in 2003, threw Marek Krecielewski (POL) for waza-ari (half point) to win both gold and the $1,000 award that was distributed to the champions of each of the seven weight divisions.
“I'm happy to have won and there’s still a lot of stuff to work on, but this shows that everything I've done in practice has been working,” Takata said.
Takata advanced to the final following a close win over Jean Pierre Choy (PER/North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) who had defeated Taraje Williams-Murray (Bronx, N.Y./NYAC/Spartak), a 2004 Olympian at 60 kg, earlier in the day.
“The final was hard, but my semi match was probably the toughest I had today,” Takata said.
Three Americans also claimed bronze medals during Saturday’s event.
