Malloy Places Fifth at Poland World Cup

Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif./San Jose State University/57kg) claimed the top finish for an American at a World Cup event in 2006 over the weekend, finishing fifth Saturday at the Poland World Cup in Warsaw.

Competing in her first senior A-Level event. Malloy picked up her first match with a walkover against Katrien Ongena, but lost in the second round by waza-ari (half-point) to eventual silver medalist Ekaterina Melnikova (RUS).

Malloy came back in the repechage, defeating Olesya Savchuk (UKR) by and Monika Wozniak (POL), both by ippon (instant win) to advance to the bronze medal match where she lost a close match by yuko (quarter-point) to Lena Goldi (SUI), a five-time World Cup medalist who also placed fifth at the Paris Super World Cup in February.

A freshman at San Jose State University, this is Malloy’s first full season as a senior athlete.  Ranked second in the United States behind 2005 World Team member Valerie Gotay (Temecula, Calif.), Malloy has been a fixture on the senior roster since 2002 when she won her first major international tournament as a 16-year-old.

Tomoyo Yoshinaga (San Jose, Calif./Tohkon Judo Club/70kg) also competed in this event during the Sunday draws, but lost her opening match to Katarzyna Pilocik (POL) and was eliminated from tournament.

Malloy and Yoshinaga will both remain in Poland through March 9 for a post-competition training camp.
