Middle and High School Nationals Results
(Tinley Park, Ill.) – Nearly 300 junior athletes competed at the USA Judo Middle and High School National Championships Saturday at the Holiday Inn Select and Convention Center in Tinley Park, Ill. with nearly all of the top-ranked juniors in attendance.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the day, top-ranked Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site/73kg) fought Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) in the final.

Team USA Vs. Japan Goodwill Match
Nine U.S. athletes will have the opportunity to compete against the Japanese High School All-Star Team in a goodwill match at approximately 2:00 p.m., March 26.
This team competition will allow some of the top U.S. juniors to match up against Japan’s future Olympians with the exhibition taking place immediately following the Collegiate National Championships. On March 25, all nine of these athletes will compete in the High School Nationals which is being held in conjunction with Collegiate and Middle School Nationals.

Middle School and High School Nationals Home Schooling Procedures
Home schooled athletes participating in the Middle School and High School National Championships must submit an academic and full time student certification form, signed and seal affixed by school Registrar or equivalent official or evidence from the student’s state giving authorization for the student to be home-schooled must accompany the application. If the State Board does not certify then a letter must be submitted from the state verifying that they do not board certify home schooling in their state. In addition we will need a notarized signed letter from the athlete's instructor indicating that they in fact have home schooled the athlete, including dates of instruction and the grade level attained by the athlete.
Middle School and High School National Championship Finals
Athletes competing in the Middle School and High School National Championships in Tinley Park, Ill. this weekend are advised that the gold medal finals for each division will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday March 25.
Coaches Meetings
Coaches meetings for the Middle School, High School and Collegiate National Championships will be held Friday March 24 at 8 p.m. and Saturday March 25 at 3:30 p.m.
Referee Meeting for Referees, Athletes and Coaches
There will be a REFEREE MEETING/RULES INTERPRETATION meeting on Friday, March 24 at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel and Convention Center in Tinley Park, Illinois from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. All referees are asked to attend. It is suggested that coaches, players and interested parties attend as well to learn the latest interpretations of the International Judo Federation Referee Commission. The latest rules concerning the edge rule and the 5 second penalty will be discussed. All Pan-American Circuit events and European Super A or A events, USA Judo Senior Nationals and THIS event will be utilizing these new interpretations.
New Rules Interpretations Take Effect for Midwestern and Middle School, High School and Collegiate National Championships
Current IJF RULES interpretations about the EDGE RULE and RED ZONE will be utilized at the Midwestern Championships in Libertyville, IL on March 12th and at the Middle School, High School and Collegiate National Championships in Tinley Park, IL on March 25th – 26th. Discussion of the application these interpretations will be discussed the evening before each event at 6:00pm at the tournament headquarters. All Referees, Players, Coaches and interested parties are encouraged to attend this meeting.

To those flying to Chicago for the Middle School, High School & Collegiate Nationals in Tinley Park, IL, the following information is being disseminated for your information:
These Championships are being held in Tinley Park, Illinois about 44 miles south of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and about 26 miles southwest of Chicago’s Midway Airport. According to Mapquest, driving times are about 53 and 40 minutes respectively. This assumes no traffic. In traffic, these times can easily make you late. Participation Eligibility:
High School: 9th - 12th Grade
Middle School: 7th - 9th Grade
Collegiate: Currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate program with no fewer than 12 credit hours.
*Athletes in 6th grade may request a waiver to participate in the Middle School Championships.
Seventh and 8th grade athletes may request a waiver to participate in the High School Championships.

- Fourteen first place winners of the elite Olympic High School categories will be eligible for
a 10-day training trip to Japan next summer.
- Junior Points Tournament for High School and Collegiate athletes, 5 points for first place, 3 points for second place, 2 points for third place.
- E Level Senior Tournament (no points) for Collegiate athletes
- High School Champions are eligible for competition in the Champions and Cultural Exchange Tour
- Competitors with 3.0 GPA receive Academic All-American status
Team USA vs. Japan
Nine members of Japan's High School All-Star Team will participate in a goodwill match against some of the top-ranked U.S. high school players immediately following the Collegiate National Championships at approximately 2 p.m. March 26.
Team USA will compete against Japan in the the following divisions:

- Male 81kg
- Male 90kg
- Male 100kg
- Male +100kg
- Female 52kg
- Female 70kg
Spectators who mention the Japanese Consulate receive admission of $5 at the door, a discount of 50% off the normal $10 price.

Tohkon Judo Academy and USA Judo International Training Camp
An international training camp will be held in Chicago, Ill., March 23-24 and 27, immediately proceeding and following the Middle School, High School and Collegiate National Championships. Judoka of all ages are invited to participate in this event featuring a large team of top-level international competitors from Japan, Nigeria, Czech Republic, Turkey and the United States, including the Elite All-Star Japanese High School Team. The Japanese Team will include seven male judo players (one from each Olympic weight division) as well as two female athletes (52kg and 70kg). Guest clinicians include:
- Maje Omagbaluwaje, three-time Olympian from Nigeria, U.S. and Nigerian National Champion and All African Games Gold Medalist
- Peter Babjak – Czech Republic National Champion and World Team Member, U.S. Open Gold medalist and Shoriki Cup Bronze Medalist
- Zarife Yildirim – Turkish National Champion and Olympic Team Member
Camp coordinators include Douglas Tono (Tohkon Judo Academy), Gary Norton (Little Rock Judo Center) and Tim Schultheis (Gurnee Judo Club).
