| USA Judo Life Membership Scholarship
Program
Purpose: The USA Judo Life Member Scholarship
Grants are intended to help defray athlete’s tuition
and education costs, and in so doing, encourage athletes to
further their formal education in preparation for a career
alongside their athletic endeavors. The Life Member Scholarship
Grants may be secondary to other financial assistance for
which an athlete may be eligible or may receive.
Award Amount: Life Member Scholarship Grants
are awarded in amounts up to $2,000 per semester and are for
tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board, and required
transportation (excluding car payments).
Eligibility: Athletes who are high performance
athletes and potential elite athletes, and who are, or will
be, enrolled in an accredited degree or certificate-granting
program are eligible to apply for Life Member Scholarship
Grants. Qualified applicants must also be in good academic
standing, as defined by the institution and maintain a grade
point average of 2.0 or better on a 3.0 system and 3.0 or
better on a 4.0 system. Inasmuch as this is a need-based program,
income must not exceed the cap established as: $30,000 per
year for single athletes and $60,000 for married athletes
with a spouse who has income.
Applications: Eligible athletes can obtain
current applications from the USA Judo National Office. Applications
must be submitted with a copy of the athlete’s most
recent federal income tax return and a copy of the athlete’s
official transcript from high school or college.
Payments: Scholarship Grants will be paid
directly to an athlete’s school on behalf of the awardee
in a timely manner after the award date. If the athlete has
already paid for the term in question, the athlete will be
reimbursed upon proof of satisfactory completion or the term
(grade transcripts) and proof of payment via an official receipt.
Forfeiture: Scholarship Grant funds awarded,
but not paid, as of the end of the grant year (December 31),
to either an athlete’s school or directly to an athlete,
are subject to forfeiture.
Any forfeited grant monies will be returned to the USA Judo
Life Member Scholarship Grant fund unless an extension is
granted.
Grant Award Reconsiderations: Any athlete
may apply for reconsideration, if new and compelling circumstances
have arisen since their last application which would impact
their financial situation. Athletes should contact the USA
Judo Life Member Scholarship Committee for reconsideration
application procedures.
Collegiate Eligibility: Current and prospective
college student-athletes should be advised that receipt of
USA Judo funds may jeopardize their collegiate eligibility.
Questions should be directed to the appropriate person in
the college athletics department or the appropriate college
governing association.
