Personal Narrative: The youngest of eight children, Lori ran cross-country in high school before becoming involved in judo. Pierce was introduced to the sport through a 2000 "U.S. Association of Blind Athletes Abilities Day" led by Paralympic gold medalist Scott Moore. She fell in love with the sport immediately and enrolled in Moore 's dojo at the University of Denver the following week. In 2002, Pierce struck gold at her first international competition, the International Blind Sports Association World Judo Championships in Rome, Italy.
