Special Awards

A number of special awards are given at the annual meeting of USA Judo's Board of Directors. These awards are as follows:

1. Henry Stone Award: This award is a carryover from the time when the AAU was the governing body for Judo. The Henry Stone award is given each year in honor of Professor Stone, University of California - Berkeley for his contribution to judo in getting judo started in the Amateur Sports of America. He also was instrumental in developing the weight category system that was accepted by the AAU in certifying Judo as a sport. It is awarded to the administrator of Judo which the Board of Directors feels has contributed the most in a given year.

2. John Osako Award: This award was authorized at the November, 1983 meeting and was created to honor Mr. John Osako who was instrumental in developing Judo, and especially refereeing, in the United States. A grant of $10,000 was made to USJI by M&M/Mars Corporation to fund the award in perpetuity. It is presented annually in recognition of contributions to Judo as a referee.

3. Adrea Bregman Memorial Award: This award was originated in 1989 and the recipient is selected and the award is funded by the family of Mrs. Bregman. It is given bi-annually for outstanding contributions to the sport of Judo.

4. Faye Allen Award: This award was authorized at the October, 1997 meeting. This award is intended to recognize a person's efforts and contributions to the furtherance of Women's Judo benefiting the memory of Faye Allen who gave of her time and talents to Women's Judo.

5. Thomas Dalton Award: This award was authorized and awarded initially in 2001 in honor of Dr. Thomas Dalton, who was an A-level referee, Officer and Director in the U.S. Judo Federation and USA Judo and valued contributor to the sport throughout his life.
